BGE wants to add surcharges to gas bills
BGE is calling on rate-payers to help pay for the replacement of aging gas lines.
The company is asking Maryland’s Public Service Commission to approve five years of surcharges onto customers gas bills.
BGE began four years ago adding up to $2 onto monthly gas bills but says more is needed to continue improvements.
“This is all about the gas infrastructure, our customers are served by. It’s an effort to improve the reliability and improve the safety,” said BGE Spokeswoman Linda Foy.
But critics believe customers shouldn’t pay for infrastructure until its already in place.
“In our view, BGE has not justified this, basically, double acceleration,” said Joseph Cleaver, Assistant People’s Counsel.
The PSC will hold a second public hearing in Columbia on Wednesday.
