EAST BALTIMORE PLANS | 'We're going to put this neighborhood back'
BALTIMORE (WBFF) - Baltimore city officials marked the start of plans to turn a crumbling factory building into a community complex that will house an adult literacy program and job training center.
The vacant Hoen Lithograph Building, at East Biddle and North Chester streets, is being transformed into office space for city nonprofits, stores and a workplace incubator.
Leaders say the project will return East Baltimore back to the thriving community it once was.
"When we started this journey when [former Baltimore mayor and politician Clarence H.] 'Du' Burns was on his last year, he said to me we're going to rebuild east Baltimore to Clifton Park," said state Sen. Nathaniel McFadden, who represents the area.
He became emotional, adding: "We're going to put this neighborhood back like we found it in the '40s and '50s."
Once completed, the new building will be a model for future neighborhood transformations.
