Friends & family pay respects at viewing of Edgewood shooting victim

EDGEWOOD, Md. (WBFF) -- Family and friends gathered to pay their respects to one of the three people killed in a mass shooting in Edgewood.

Jose Oscar Hidalgo Romero, 34, was shot and killed while working at Advanced Granite Solutions Wednesday.

On Friday family and friends gathered at Edgewood Assembly of God for a viewing and memorial service.

The service began with people praying for strength in the midst of such tragedy.

"He was just a very good guy," said Selvin Cruz, a close friend of Oscar. "It's not fair what happened to him. But, we cannot fight what God has decided for him. He's in a better place now. We pray for the other guys (victims). I know them. I worked with them. They're family, friends, brothers. There are no words."

Cruz said he once worked at Advanced Granite Solutions with Oscar. The two also became close through the church.

Family and friends said Oscar was very active in the church strong in his faith.

"He's going to be missed," said Pastor Roberto Martinez. "The smiles. I don't think I ever saw him with a frown face. He was always smiling, worshiping God with his hands up."

Oscar's brothers attended Friday's service and at times were overcome with emotion. His wife and child remain in El Salvador, where Oscar was originally from.

Family and friends said he was working here in order to raise enough money to send his son to school. The family is now tasked with raising enough funds to transport his body back to El Salvador.
