HUD secretary speaking at disability rights conference
BALTIMORE (AP) -- U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro is discussing the importance of supportive housing for people with disabilities at a conference in Baltimore.
Castro is the keynote speaker Wednesday at the annual conference of the National Disability Rights Network.
Executive Director Curt Decker says Castro has been a champion of safe, accessible and affordable housing for people with disabilities. This year's conference is focused on housing as the linchpin of efforts to integrate people with disabilities into the community.
The Washington-based group is also recognizing the Maryland Disability Law Center for bringing a lawsuit against Baltimore County that resulted in a March settlement providing housing remedies. The settlement includes the development of 1,000 affordable rental homes, including 100 units fully accessible for families with disabilities.
