Maryland unveils new school 'star rating system'

BALTIMORE (WBFF) - After two years of development, the state rolled out a new school star rating system that grades each public school and district in Maryland.

FOX45's Liz Ortiz reports that, of the more than 1,400 schools in Maryland, about 35 received the lowest rating.

At least 20 of those schools - with just one star - are in Baltimore City.

But the Maryland State Education Association feels that star ratings alone won't transform a school.

The association also says the report card is vague, missing a school climate survey that allows parents and students to survey the culture within a given school.
