WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) -- Investigators with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office arrested three people who nearly got away with $80,000 in the so-called Grandparents Scam.
The scam involves elderly victims who are contacted by phone and told their granddaughter or grandson is in jail and needs a large sum of money.
In this latest case, deputies saw the three suspects getting a package with a large sum of money.
Deputies arrested 22-year-old Leevensky Lambert of Miramar; 24-year-old Eghosasere Auboraye of Miramar; and 24-year-old Keon Smith of Baltimore.
All three are due in court Sunday morning.
Last December, the sheriff's office arrested a 19-year-old from Royal Palm Beach in a similar scam.
The sheriff's office said if you receive a call like this, hang up and call 911 immediately. People should also talk to their elderly relatives to make them aware of the scam.
