Police: Store worker shoots, kills suspected shoplifter at Seat Pleasant Discount Mart
A popular neighborhood store on Eastern Avenue in Prince George's County shuttered Wednesday night.
Seat Pleasant Police said a man was shot and killed earlier in the afternoon by an armed store employee at Discount Mart.
"He was doing his job," said a man who locked the store and was escorted to his car by officers.
Police said it was just after 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon when the man who was shot entered the store.
When officers arrived on scene, they found that man wounded on the floor. They could not say if he was armed.
"We believe that the individual was an alleged person of interest in a theft or shoplifting that occurred inside of this business," Seat Pleasant Police Chief Devan Martin said.
Police are working to find out how a petty crime led to lethal use of force. The police chief made it a point to say the shot was fired during a physical struggle.
"There were many witness, many different statements we need to gather," Martin said. "We're going to work hand in hand with Prince George's County homicide and bring answers to our community."
Several surveillance cameras captured the incident. Police said they will go frame by frame through the video.
"It's just sad and they wonder why all these stores are closing," customer Denise Gaines said.
Martin said the employee who fired the fatal shot was legally able to possess the gun.
Prince George's County Police will take the lead in the investigation.
