BALTIMORE (WBFF) - On a stretch of Monument Street today, there's a memorial remembering the dead.

There's also a store clerk who will never forget.

"Right as soon as I opened the door, the gunshots rang out," he said.

Lamar Burgess was closing the Green Line Market last night when a white van came rolling down Monument Street, firing round after round, striking four people who were standing on the block.

Surveillance cameras captured the assault and the aftermath.

A woman who was shot several times crawled to the Green Line Market, where Lamar Burgess ran to the rescue.

"She said she didn't want to come inside. She wanted me to take her to her son because her son ran across the street and collapsed. So I carried her across the street and laid her next to her son. The officer was doing CPR on her son, but he was gasping for air and I knew he was gone."

The unidentified 16-year-old died at the hospital.

The woman, believed to be his mother, survived.

Lamar Burgess carried her to the ambulance.

"I thought she was going to go in my arms, but she told me 'I love you,' and I told her I loved her, and they took her to the hospital."

A 14-year-old and a 15-year-old were also shot during the attack, and survived.

But it could be a lifetime before many here recover.

"I could have been right there with them, 'cause I was standing right there," said Burgess. "I'm still shaking. I ain't been to sleep last night."
